US athlete turned away from the American flag during the US Olympic reward ceremony.

31-year-old American hammer thrower, Gwen Berry, who is a bronze medalist, made her silent protest at the moment when the national anthem sounded. Standing next to two other medalists, she turned away from the Star-Spangled Banner and then eventually covered her face with a black T-shirt with “Athlete Activist” writing on the front.

Berry then claimed that it was her protest against “systemic racism.” She then reportedly also said that she was a victim of a “set-up” after the incident.

“I feel like it was a setup, and they did it on purpose,” Berry said. “I was p*ssed, to be honest.”

The athlete’s behavior sparkled the outrage on social media. Many Americans have proposed to exclude Berry from the national team and send someone to Tokyo who will not be ashamed of the American flag.

“What the actual crap is this? You don’t have respect for our anthem and/or flag? Fine. But you shouldn’t represent our nation,” came one response on Twitter.

“If she doesn't want to represent us, don't send her,” was another blunt assessment.

According to the US Olympic Committee, the hammer thrower could not be banned from the team and punished in any way for this, since the political actions are officially allowed during the selection for the Olympic games.
