A California woman busted for smuggling $414,000 in cash inside her car near the USA-Mexico border
A California woman was busted smuggling more than $400,000 in cash in her Toyota Prius, authorities said.
The name of the woman was not released. Border Patrol agents stopped the 46-year-old woman driving her 2012 Toyota Primus on near the Mexica Border and when checked her vehicle with her permission, they discovered $414,000 in cash, wrapped in cellophane, and hidden inside the car’s door.
The smuggler was taken into custody for suspicion of bulk currency and the vehicle with cash were seized, Border Patrol said.
“The US Border Patrol works tirelessly to protect the homeland from transnational criminal organizations — the same criminal enterprises that poison our communities with narcotics and smuggle human beings like cargo,” San Diego Sector Border Patrol Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke said.
It’s unclear where and how the woman received this amount of money in cash. The investigators work on determining the origin of the money.
