Washington DC school instructor under investigation after making third-graders reenact Holocaust with digging mass graves and shooting victims

A Washington D.C. Elementary School instructor placed on leave and pending investigation after telling third-graders to reenact Holocaust.

According to the parents who spoke out to Washington Post, the librarian at Watkins Elementary School directed children to simulate the scenes from Holocaust like digging the mass graves for their classmates and shooting the victims. One of the third-graders was told to portray Adolf Hitler and pretend to commit suicide at the end of the exercise. This student was a Jew, by the way.

During the exercises, she also allegedly made antisemitic comments.

"I want to acknowledge the gravity of this poor instructional decision, as students should never be asked to act out or portray any atrocity, especially genocide, war, or murder," wrote McScott Berkowitz, the school's principal, in an email to parents.

One of the parents said their son was told to pretend to be on a train going to a concentration camp. The boy was also told to pretend as though he was dying in a gas chamber.

The post reported that the instructor explained to the children that the Holocaust was arranged because “the Jews ruined Christmas.”

The incident with the instructor became known after the kids themselves complained about it to their homeroom teachers, the reports said.

A spokesperson for D.C. Public Schools emphasized the exercise was "not an approved lesson plan," adding that the DCPS "sincerely apologize(s) to our students and families who were subjected to this incident."

According to Berkowitz, the entire class met with the Watkins Elementary mental health response team following the incident.
