Missouri man sentenced for killing wife, burying her in state park near where he proposed

A Missouri man has been sentenced to 28 years behind bars for murdering his wife and burying her body in a state park, near the place where he proposed her.

Joseph Elledge was convicted in November by the grant jury and on Monday he was sentenced to 28 years in prison for killing his wife, Mengqi Ji. Elledge was charged with a second-degree murder.

Boone County Prosecuting Attorney asked the jury to sentence Elledge for the most possible long term in prison.

“The defendant deserves no break because he displayed no remorse,” Knight said, adding that he was the “biggest complainer in the history of the Boone County Jail.”

Elledge reported his wife missing in October 2019. The massive search ended up with nothing. Only in March 2021, Ji’s body was discovered at Rock Bridge State Park by a group of hikers. Ji was buried not far from the place where years earlier Elledge proposed to her and not far from the couple lived.

While being questioned, Elledge claimed that there was an argument between and at one point he pushed his wife and she struck her head and the injury caused her death.

Elledge said he suspected Ji was cheating on him and knew that she was exchanging sexual text messages on social media with a man from China. He became enraged just days before her death.

Ji moved to the U.S from China to study engineering at the University of Missouri.

Elledge then drove to the park where he dug a grave and buried Ji. The couple’s 1-year-old son was with him in the car at that moment, according to the reports.
