The US Department of Justice announced the disclosure of the largest cryptocurrency theft in history and the confiscation of bitcoins for a record amount of $ 3.6 billion, The Wall Street Journal reports.

According to Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, 34-year-old Ilya Lichtenstein and his 31-year-old wife, Heather Morgan, were arrested on Tuesday in New York.

The couple is accused of laundering 119,754 bitcoins stolen as a result of a hacking of the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange.

The key event in the investigation of this crime could be the collapse of the Alpha Bay underground darknet market, which ceased to exist in 2017 as a result of the actions of law enforcement agencies.

The Ministry of Justice reported that some of the funds stolen by hackers were transferred to Alpha Bay.
