President Donald Trump Pulls a Red Card on the Press
WASHINGTON — August 29, 2018
President Trump received a red card among other gifts in an Oval Office at a meeting with the head of world football’s governing body.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino gave Trump several tokens during a meeting on Tuesday, including red and yellow cards he joked could be useful in Mr Trump’s interactions with the press.
"One more thing," Infantino said. "You know in soccer, we have referees, right? And they have cards. Yellow cards and red cards. The yellow card is a warning, and when you want to kick out someone [shows the red card] ... so this could be useful, I don't know."
Trump replied: "That's very good. I like that! I like that" as he pretended to throw a red card at the gathered contingent in DC.
Infantino was meeting with Trump to discuss the 2026 World Cup, which the US will be hosting alongside Canada and Mexico.
"I want to thank Gianni Infantino for being here - he's the president of FIFA and a highly respected man," Trump said during the meeting. "Soccer has to be one of the fastest growing sports in the world and the job you've done is really fantastic Gianni."
Infantino predicted the 2026 edition will be the biggest sporting event in the world.
Trump will not be in office in 2026, even if he wins a second term, but he joked that perhaps his term could be extended.
"Let's see, in 2026 I won't be here [as president]. Maybe they'll extend the term? If they don't extend it the media is going to be very boring, they'll all be out of business I guess," he laughed.
