Facebook Global Purge

1125

USA – October 13, 2018

The Global Facebook Purge this week affected over 800 pages and accounts this week, making this one of the largest purges in Facebook history.

On Thursday, October 11, in their corporate newsroom Facebook made a post “Removing Additional Inauthentic Activity from Facebook”, saying “Today, we’re removing 559 Pages and 251 accounts that have consistently broken our rules against spam and coordinated inauthentic behavior. Given the activity we’ve seen — and its timing ahead of the US midterm elections — we wanted to give some details about the types of behavior that led to this action.”

Facebook is linking this to November US midterm elections, clearly giving its sweeping action strong flavor of the political motivation.

Although the social media giant administration says those deleted were rule breakers engaged in “coordinated inauthentic behavior,” some of their defenders have claimed this action amounts to an attack on independent media and the freedom of speech.

What is even more interesting in this story is that the accounts and pages removed were representing both left and right-wing political views.

The most popular pages like “Right Wing News” and “The Anti Media” were well-known and had millions of likes. People accused Facebook of targeting independent voices and others noted that some pages were suspended on Twitter too. Pages removed both supported and opposed President Donald Trump. Some were sites that monitored police corruption.

Facebook has not released a full list of the pages purged, but Facebook gave Gizmodo a few of the sites: “The Resistance, Reasonable People Unite, Reverb Press, Nation in Distress, Snowflakes.” According to Gizmodo, the October 11, 2018 purge was of sites likely run by Americans and is thus different than the earlier purge of so called “Russian sites”. Facebook has been under growing pressure in Congress for perceived political bias, which the company denies.

In the statement, the platform added that “these networks increasingly use sensational political content – regardless of its political slant – to build an audience and drive traffic to their websites, earning money for every visitor to the site. And like the politically motivated activity we’ve seen, the “news” stories or opinions these accounts and Pages share are often indistinguishable from legitimate political debate. This is why it’s so important we look at these actors’ behavior – such as whether they’re using fake accounts or repeatedly posting spam – rather than their content when deciding which of these accounts, Pages or Groups to remove.”

The New York Times reported that sites purged included “Right Wing News, which had more than 3.1 million followers, and left-wing pages that included the Resistance and Reverb Press, which had 240,000 and 816,000 followers.” The Washington Post reported that some purged accounts “had been in existence for years,” and “amassed millions of followers,” supporting both “conservative or liberal ideas.” The Post reported that Facebook only named five of the purged sites.

The Free Thought Project wrote on Twitter, “Facebook has unpublished our page After 5 years of building fans Facebook has officially unpublished our page (3.1 million fans) so we can’t post on it anymore. This is truly an outrage and we are devastated. We will do everything we can to recover our page and fight back.” However, shortly thereafter, its Twitter page was suspended too.

The Free Though Project had 3.1 million followers on Facebook. The project describes itself as “a hub for free thinking conversations” focuses on government transparency. Founded in 2013 by Jason Bassler and Matt Agorist, the site claims to “shed light” on “corrupt entities” across our planet. Its reports have covered the Monsanto row, police brutality and shootings in the US, as well as an insight into how the American government gets personal information about any citizen. The Free Though Project banned on Twitter as well.

Another page, The Anti-Media had 2.1 million followers on Facebook and 5 years of presence on the platform. Initially launched on Facebook by blogger and entrepreneur Nick Bernabe, the Anti-Media is now an independent news aggregator with a hefty amount of followers. The group, which poses as “non-partisan” and “anti-establishment,” publishes loads of “mainstream” stories, including ones dealing with the UN report about a number of civilian casualties in Afghanistan, the Tesla crisis, and Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The Anti-Media is suspended on Twitter.

Facebook also removed page “Police the Police”, dedicated to exposing US police brutality. The name of the group is apparently inspired by heated discussions following the recent string of deadly shootings by police officers across the country. This page had almost 2 million likes. Twitter banned “Police the Police” account as well.

Filming Cops project page with 1.5 million likes also removed by Facebook. Started in 2010, the blogging service’s moto is “Declare War on Police Brutality.” It has been documenting police abuse ever since. It insists that it is not demonizing officers, but is trying to report on “state-monopolized police brutality,” which it says is ignored by mainstream media.

The “Nation In Distress” group’s page on Facebook and information about it is blocked. It allegedly posted images and memes praising Donald Trump and attacking Democrats and this has brought it 3.2 million of likes. The page also reportedly claimed to be the first online publication to have endorsed Trump.  “Nation In Distress” Twitter is still alive.

Cop Block had on it’s Facebook page 1.7 mn of likes. This is a police accountability project launched by libertarian Pete Eyre and blogger AdemoFreeman in 2010. Twitter has not yet removed their account.

Another Police accountability page “Policing the Police” which was active only on Facebook. In spite is had only 54K likes, Facebook considered it as “consistently broken our rules against spam and coordinated inauthentic behavior” and suspended.

The Press for Truth Facebook page had 340Kfollowers and was removed from the platform. This is independent media outlet which claims to produce content rarely covered by mainstream media. Notably, a day before being banned, it released a story by the project’s investigative journalist, Dan Dicks, who compared Google Hub and Facebook Portal to George Orwell’s 1984 dystopia. Project’s Twitter seems to be still alive.

RT America correspondent Rachel Blevins found herself among those dragged under in the ‘inauthentic behavior’ purge. She says that Facebook took down her page and marked it as “spam” because of posts that were allegedly “misleading users.” Her page had 69K followers, and you can still visit her Twitter.

Her tweet says: “A few words on the Facebook purge… My page had nearly 70,000 followers before it was taken down and marked as “spam” because of posts that were allegedly “misleading users,” according to Facebook’s vague statement.”

Dan Dicks’ Facebook account was purged as well. On Twitter, Dicks defines himself as “an investigative journalist and a documentary film maker at @PressForTruth.” His website describes him as, “the founder of an independent media outlet known as Press For Truth which produces videos and documentary films about issues that the mainstream media often fails to report on.”

His website explains, “Dan began directing and producing his third documentary film titled ‘Into TheFire’ which deals with the G20 summit that came to Toronto Canada in the summer of 2010. In September of 2011, Dan produced ‘The Toronto Hearings on 9/11: Uncovering Ten Years of Deception’, which was a six hour project that explored various testimony from expert witnesses surrounding the attacks of September 11th, 2001.”

Now it’s absolutely clear that these actions taken by Social media giants have nothing with spam or hoaxmails removal, which have flooded the platforms. Instead of protecting users from spam messages, Facebook is actively fighting independent media and journalists, and now this happening openly without any masking with fake reasons, like “Russian trolls” or “bots”.

USA Really’s pages and accounts were banned and removed from Facebook, Twitter and other platform for multiple times. Facebook suspended private account of USA Really reporters and managers.
