Should Montana Be Sold to Canada?
HELENA – February 21, 2019
As they say, every joke contains a bit of truth, thus a the petition to sell Montana to Canada, already signed by more than 12,000 people, considered to have been made just for fun could become a real issue.
“We have too much debt and Montana is useless. Just tell them it has beavers or something…” states Ian Hammond in the petition addressed to Christian moms against private education. The petition is accompanied by a map of Canada with Montana being annexed by the country of maple syrup and hockey.
The comments under the petition are hilarious, as the petition has grabbed a lot of attention, even from some local media outlets.
“If you look at my profile I'm the person who created the original petition and posted it to reddit (u/vAppleJuice). I'm not here to complain or anything just surprised that so many people have ‘backed’ my ‘cause.’ From what I've heard it even made some local news sites in Montana as well as the top 25 of r/all. All in all this is pretty epic,” says Hammond.
Some Canadians seem to support this action as well; for example Edgar Desrochers wrote: “I’m Canadian and making Canada bigger is cool!”
And, of course, many Montanans support it as well:
“This is the easiest path to Canadian Citizenship for me. Having a real leader and some healthcare is a win-win! Enjoy the trillion dollars, that's currently what our deficit increases by, each year. What state are we selling next year?” wrote Clayton Moore, who lives in the state.
Montana became a state on November 8, 1889. It has several nicknames, although none are official, including "Big Sky Country," "The Treasure State," "Land of the Shining Mountains," and more recently "The Last Best Place." Montana is the 4th largest in area, the 8th least populous, and the 3rd least densely populated of the 50 U.S. states.
