Migrant minors are raped in detention centers: Trials are underway against a border guard
Department of Homeland Security launched an investigation into the staff of the immigrant detention center in Yuma. An official complaint was received from one of the Honduran girls that one of the officers committed an act of sexual violence on her.
A 15-year-old girl described the alleged perpetrator as “large, bearded officer”. She said that the officer with all immigrants and in the presence of other officers he put his hands inside her bra and pulled down her underwear. According to the victim, the officer spoke English and laughed, and she felt "disgraced and dishonored."
According to other prisoners, in particular Honduran children, the officers, after complaints about the quality of food and water, punished everyone who was in the cell. They took away the mats on which they slept and forced them to sleep on the concrete floor. Other children also complained that they were forbidden to approach the windows and insulted in every possible way, often called prisoners Spanish offensive term “puto.”
“U.S. Customs and Border Protection treats those in our custody with dignity and respect and provides multiple avenues to report any allegations of misconduct. We take all allegations seriously and investigate all formal complaints," CBP spokesman said.
The CBP said the incidents would be thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators punished. A CBP representative also assured that all employees should serve in accordance with National Standards on Transportation, Escort, Detention and Search.
