CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — June 19, 2018

Two people were killed and five other people wounded in a shooting in the University Village neighborhood of Chicago.

According to police, the shooting took place in the 1300-block of South Loomis Street at about 4:45 a.m. and stemmed from a party, police said. Two vehicles were driving around the block several times when someone started shooting

One of the shooting victims was a 17-year-old boy who was fired upon at close range in the head. He was then taken to the hospital. Chicago Fire Department paramedics believe that he was presumed dead.

Witnesses said the boy was still breathing by the time emergency crews arrived. He was transported to Stroger Hospital in very critical condition.

"That individual has a catastrophic injury," said Chicago Police First Deputy Superintendent Anthony Riccio. "He was shot in the head and the prognosis is not good. I do understand that paramedics looked at him, believed him to be deceased, covered him with that sheet and moved on to another individual who was nearby who was also shot. They saw motion, movement underneath the sheet. Officers who were present notified paramedics, this man is still alive."

Sources say that doctors are continuing to work on him.

A woman Shalonza E. McToy, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds. Police said she was found in the 1400-block of South Washburne Avenue.

An additional 22 people were injured. Among them, a 21-year-old man was shot in the leg and a 23-year-old man was shot in the arm. Both were transported to Stroger Hospital in stable condition.

A 25-year-old man shot multiple times in the abdomen and was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in stable condition too. A 21-year-old man, was transported at Rush Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Area Central detectives are investigating leads and are confident that the perpetrators will be apprehended. They said there are several surveillance cameras in the area whose footage they are reviewing.

Authorities suspect the shooting to be gang-related, because the victims are refusing to cooperate with the investigation.

Earlier, on May 26th, several people were killed in one night from Friday to Saturday in Memorial Day weekend in Chicago.

Officials said the city’s murder rate has trended down so far this year compared to the last two years. By May 2016, there had been 262 murders compared to 256 last year. This year has seen 208 homicides thus far.

Despite the downward trend, Chicago is still one of the most violent cities in the country.
