Portland Police Conduct Murder Investigation after Responding to Report of Gunfire

PORTLAND, OREGON — July 4, 2018

According to police, reports of a shooting came in at 9:20 p.m. near the 12200 block of Southeast Harold Street in Portland.

Officers immediately arrived to investigate the incident, finding an injured man inside a home at the scene. Paramedics were unable to save the victim, who died in transport to the hospital.

Police identified the victim as 37-year-old Billy R. Mayfield. The medical examiner determined that the death to be a homicide.

According to witnesses, two cars sped away from the house immediately following the shooting, one of the vehicles had as many as nine people inside.

Police searched the area, but were unable to locate any of the suspects.

At this time police do not believe there is any immediate danger to the community in relation to the shooting.

The Portland Police Bureau Detective Division's Homicide Detail will lead the investigation.
