Uber driver is accused of kidnapping passengers after chasing a car that hit-and-run his taxi
The couple became hostages of circumstance in which the angry Uber driver decided to pursue the car after an accident. Now, 38-year-old Olufemi S Olomola is in custody and is facing numerous criminal charges.
According to police reports, the taxi driver, while driving a car, several times ignored the Stop signs and the red traffic light, almost knocking down a pedestrian, chasing the car that hit him.
Accusations include abduction, reckless driving and felony hit and run.
A married couple identified as John Murray and his wife, Tameka Swann, who is in the rear passenger seat, was broadcast live on Facebook. The footage shows a conversation with the 911 dispatcher, who repeatedly called on Olomola to stop.
As the passengers themselves said, they are the parents of four children and were simply terrified of this trip.
"The driver won't let us out. He's trying to catch the guy because he hit us," Swann tells the dispatcher. "I got four kids I can't be riding like this -- you've got to let us out".
In a statement to CNN, Uber said "This driver's behavior is deeply concerning and his access to the app has been removed. We have been in contact with the rider and stand ready to support law enforcement on their investigation."
The incident occurred in Richmond, Virginia. It is reported that the couple received minor injuries after a collision with another car.
