Five Black Men Beat a 92-year-old Man With a Piece of Concrete
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – 9 July, 2018
Rodolfo Rodriguez, 92, set out on his regular evening walk around his South Los Angeles neighborhood on Independence Day. During his walk, he accidentally bumped into a young girl, the child’s mother then allegedly attacked him with the piece of concrete. Soon after, four men joined in the beating of the elderly man, a bystander captured all this and called the police.
“Go back to your country, why are you here, bad things,” the witness said the mother told Rodriguez, who is a legal U.S. resident. "The woman pushed him and dropped him. She took the block of concrete and hit him in his head many times. That's why it was very bad," the witness said. "She see me in my car and walking to me and she told me, 'Oh, what are you doing? What are you saying? Why are you taking my picture?'"
Rodriguez suffered a broken cheekbone and two broken ribs, in addition to facial injuries. He remains hospitalized according to KABC.
Los Angeles sheriff’s investigators have reviewed the video shot by the witness and are seeking the five people who attacked Rodriguez, reported KTLA.
"We are concerned, especially with the type of crime they committed," Deputy D'Angelo Robinson told the station. "There was what appears to be a 4-year-old child there who witnessed the entire thing. We can't have these kind of people like that out in the streets."
None of the attackers have been identified and the investigation is ongoing. Rodriguez, who doesn’t understand English, still has no idea why he was attacked, his grandson, Erik Mendoza, told KCBS.
A GoFundMe account has been established to help pay Rodriguez’s medical costs.
The drive had raised more than $31,000 of its original $15,000 goal by Monday morning.
