NYPD Launches Internal Investigation Against Cops After Unfounded Arrest of Man on Suspicion of Smoking Marijuana
NYPD has long been known for its super-brutal methods of arresting alleged suspects. So this time, 5 days ago, the process of detaining a 20-year-old man by eight policemen was filmed. When the video became viral, caring citizens protested in front of the police station. This fact could not be ignored by the police leadership and a decision was made to evaluate the actions of the police in the video.
The video taken that night shows that the man does not even understand the reason for the arrest, he also does not oppose the officers. The police, however, remain silent and instantly increase their numbers.
I’m walking home from work and this undercover cop was holding this man. The guy asked for the cop to identify himself, he ignore that. He asked what crime he commit, he ignore that too. I pulled out my phone. You can hear the guy screaming “I never thought it would happen to me” pic.twitter.com/YW2dI3g8fk— Velvet (@TheVelvetRope__) March 5, 2020
It is worth recalling that the maximum fine for the alleged crime (possession of marijuana up to 2 ounces) does not exceed $ 200, which gives reason to think about the need for so many police officers per square meter of New York.
It was reported that the police chased two men that night, but they only managed to detain Fitzroy Gayle, who was later charged with misdemeanors and a violation.
“Gayle was arrested and charged with two misdemeanors - resisting arrest and obstruction of governmental administration in the second degree -- as well as a violation of unlawful possession of marijuana in the second degree, the NYPD said in a statement, according to CNN.
The NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea also drew attention to gaps in the training of officers involved in Gayle's detention.
"This incident is currently under internal review," the NYPD statement.
The mayor of New York did not dare to criticize either side and only said that the conclusion would be issued after the completion of a comprehensive investigation.
