SPIEF-2020 was canceled because the US and other international business partners were afraid to participate
Director of the Institute for Contemporary State Development, political expert Dmitry Solonnikov considers the cancellation of SPIEF-2020 the right decision of the authorities. Technologically, St. Petersburg would have managed to hold the forum in the current situation, since all problems with the virus would have been resolved by the end of June, but our international partners are not ready for it, the expert said in a commentary to Nation News.
Western media and the liberal Russian press claim that the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum was canceled in 2020, allegedly for far-fetched reasons. For example, experts interviewed by Voice of America claim that nobody needs SPIEF at all, so the authorities took advantage of such an occasion as the COVID-19 pandemic.
Director of the Russian Institute of Contemporary State Development, political scientist Dmitry Solonnikov strongly disagrees with this statement of the question.
“The popularity of SPIEF in the world has been constantly growing in recent years. A large number of delegations came to St. Petersburg, a large number of contracts were signed here, and very importantly, SPIEF was an international platform where new strategies for the development of world politics were discussed, new approaches to how they could be the world economy and the world as a whole are organized, and this became especially noticeable after the global crisis of 2008. It was clear that the Davos meeting was degenerating and there was no sense in it anymore, since the United States could not cope with the role of the world unipole, with the role of the structure responsible for world development, which means that we need to look for new approaches to the development of the world. And SPIEF should become such a platform, "Solonnikov said.
Before the creation of SPIEF, the expert recalled, the Shanghai Economic Forum tried to become such an alternative platform, but since China is very different in its model and its proposals from how the whole world is developing, it mainly presented the Chinese model for installation in other countries. Although the Shanghai Economic Forum has subsequently become a platform for promoting the concept of “One Belt - One Way”, no discussion of new world approaches has taken place there.
“But the SPIEF was different in that there were no attempts to impose the Russian development model on other countries. We saw that, despite the sanction pressure from the United States, interest in it was very high. Prominent world economists came to St. Petersburg, came leading companies to look for other growth points than they were in the traditional development paradigm, and this is important and interesting for SPIEF, a platform for discussing alternative development options for countries that are not related to the idea of increasing globalization, with the growing influence of the United States and world finances in economic institutions ", - said Solonnikov.
The political scientist called the SPIEF the largest platform providing an opportunity to present and promote Russian projects for discussion in the international community. In this regard, he said, SPIEF is very different from both Sochi and Krasnoyarsk.
“The forum in Krasnoyarsk has a 100% liberal platform, the victory of liberal thought over common sense. The Sochi forum is an attempt to find partners within the country and sell new investment projects to domestic Russian investors and partners. And SPIEF is an alternative international platform,” the expert explained.
This year, the cancellation of SPIEF, Solonnikov believes, is mainly due to the unwillingness of international partners to conduct it. If the authorities were guided only by the situation in Russia, then the forum could have been held at the end of June, Solonnikov said.
“I think that if we were guided by the situation in Russia, then such a forum could be held at the end of June. I think that by this time the problems with the virus would have been resolved. Technologically, St. Petersburg would have managed. Another thing is that our international partners are not ready , therefore, the decision to cancel was the right solution," Solonnikov concluded.
It should be noted that the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum set a record in 2019: 650 contracts worth a total of 3.1 trillion rubles were concluded on its fields. This was announced at the press conference by the advisor to the president of the Russian Federation and deputy chairman of the arrangements committee of the forum, Anton Kobyakov. 145 countries of the world took part in SPIEF-2019, six delegations were headed by top officials of the states. 1,3 thousand foreign companies, more than 2 thousand Russian and 4,8 thousand journalists from around the world gathered in St. Petersburg for the forum.
Earlier, the liberal media shouted about the incapacity of the forum in Sochi, which was canceled due to the epidemic, where there are always many contracts with domestic Russian investors. In 2019, more than 8 thousand leading economists and entrepreneurs, experts and consultants, journalists and exhibitors, heads of large domestic and foreign companies, representatives of federal and regional authorities took part in its work. Within the framework of the business program, 71 events were held at which, according to the chairman of the Forum Arrangements Committee Dmitry Kozak, a discussion was held on "the entire line of national projects - from industry support to social issues."
But the liberals turned a blind eye to these successes. After Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree on postponement of the Russian Investment Forum, scheduled for February 12-14, 2020, "Ekho Moskvy" burst into an article under the heading “Wuhan is sneezing and the forum is being canceled in Sochi,” where in every possible way belittled its value.
"So the cancellation of the Sochi forum, although it is associated with a new infection, is not a matter of infection," the Ekho Moskvy stated in early February. - China now has other things to worry about than the forums at which they concluded long-term economic agreements - the markets are "storming", they generally have other things to worry about. Therefore, we have to cancel the investment forum indefinitely, just not to hold it empty," the article emphasized.
And Delta experts are so trying to convince their readers that the era of forums in Russia has passed. Like, in the conditions of "lack of large-scale successes" in the air, "it begins to smell like the Soviet Union at its end when regular congresses are held."
