24-year-old Brooklyn man drowns in Queens at start of Memorial Day weekend
A Brooklyn man drowned Friday afternoon off a beach in Queens at the start of the Memorial Day weekend. Police said.
Fidel Ramirez was pulled from the water near Beach 91st St. in Rockaways after the police responded to a 911 call at 3:01 p.m. He was taken to St. John’s Hospital but the medics couldn’t save him.
There was no information how far Ramirez had gone in the water but the first responders believe that an undertow pulled him in deeper.
“We just lost a young man who got caught in a dangerous current in the Rockaways. Our hearts break for his family and his friends,” Mayor de Blasio tweeted on Friday afternoon.
Swimming has been banned during the coronavirus pandemic, and no lifeguards are on duty.
