The mayor of New York believes that the protesters themselves provoked officers to ram the crowd
New York Mayor Bill De Blasio justifies the actions of the police, which nearly crushed the crowd of protesters. The video showed that police SUVs stopped in front of a displeased group of people, and then one of them, without slowing down, drove through people, pushing them in different directions.
According to official information, no one was injured in this incident. Mass protests across the country also took place in New York. Dozens of people blocked the streets in protest against police brutality, while in other cities law enforcement officers shot people with rubber bullets and paintballs, New York City police also decided to take radical action and push the protesters by SUVs.
Bill De Blasio said the example shows how people threatened police officers.
“It is inappropriate for protestors to surround a police vehicle and threaten police officers,” he said. “That’s wrong on its face and that hasn’t happened in the history of protests in this city.”
Later, the head of New York explained that a full investigation and assessment of the actions of officers who were inside the SUVs will be carried out.
New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has the exact opposite opinion. Ocasio-Cortez finds De Blasio's words inappropriate in this situation.
“As mayor, this police department is under your leadership,” the Democrat congresswoman tweeted early Sunday. “This moment demands leadership and accountability from each of us. Defending and making excuses for NYPD running SUVs into crowds was wrong.”
@NYCMayor your comments tonight were unacceptable.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) May 31, 2020

Make it right. De-escalate.
According to unofficial information, the officers who were inside the patrol cars were afraid for their lives and that they would run into someone if they put the car in reverse, so when the protesters started throwing objects, the drivers decided to push the crowd.
