Video: driver speeds up on Seattle Interstate and slams into the crowd of protestors leaving one dead and one in serious condition
A Seattle driver hit two people on the highway with his car and then turned himself in. The tragic accident happened early Saturday on Interstate 5.
A new video circulating online shows a horrible moment of a white vehicle speeding up the night Interstate blocked by a group of George Floyd protestors. It can be seen that some people have time to run for cover and escape the collision before the tires begin to scratch and two unlucky protestors appear to be on the car’s way. The vehicle then bumps into them.
Two hit protestors can be seen flying up over the car and come crashing down on the ground.
The suffered protestors are 24-year-old Summer Taylor and 32-year-old Diaz Love. Both were taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition where later Taylor died. Love remains in intensive-care unit.
One of the victims said that she apparently heard some gunshots before the accident.
“We all mostly got out of the way, we like ducked and ran out there,” the woman said.
Seattle Fire units transported two females estimated to be in their 20s to Harborview from this incident. One patient is in critical condition and the other is in stable condition. https://t.co/TmrYY1xBMS— Seattle Fire Dept. (@SeattleFire) July 4, 2020
The driver, 27-year-old Dawit Kelete of Seattle was arrested and booked into King County Jail without bail. He has been charged with two counts of vehicular assault.
“The driver was reserved and appeared sullen throughout his time in custody,” the probable-cause statement said. “At one point he asked if the injured pedestrians were okay.”
The investigators believe that Kelete was driving the wrong way of the ramp and it was not an apparent targeted attack. However, they said, impairment was not considered a factor.
