For more than 60 days, fierce battles between militant protesters in Portland and the police have not abated. Now that federal troops have stepped onto Portland and started using tear gas, but the creative activists have begun using leaf blowers.
Although violent protests occasionally give way to peaceful demonstrations, Mayor Ted Wheeler demands that the soldiers be removed from the city. Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf ignores the words of local authorities, citing the general need for such measures.
"These officers are not military. These police officers are not stormtroopers, they are not the Gestapo as some have described them," Wolf said. "I don't need invitations by the state, state mayors, or state governors to do our job," Wolf said, adding that Oregon elected officials had "fostered this environment that allows these individuals to attack the courthouse."
Earlier, protesters burned down several administrative buildings, including the courthouse. As federal troops began to more aggressively target the rebels, the Portland Mothers, numbering about 400, joined the protesters.
