China will detain American citizens if the U.S. doesn't stop prosecuting Chinese scientists
China has warned the U.S. government that it was going to detain the American citizens in their country if the U.S.A. doesn’t stop prosecuting Chinese scholars, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The warnings were repeatedly sent through multiple channels, including the U.S. Embassy in Beijing beginning from this summer, the report by the Journal said.
The U.S.-China relationships changed after the spread of the coronavirus and it even got tougher after the U.S. charges several Chinese scientists who were conducting research at U.S. university with concealing ties to the Chinese military.
“We are aware that the Chinese government has, in other instances, detained American, Canadian and other individuals without legal basis to retaliate against lawful prosecutions and to exert pressure on their governments, with a callous disregard of the individuals involved,” the newspaper quoted John Demers, head of the Justice Department’s national security division, as saying.
