161 people were infected, 24 of them lethally in the result of a COVID-19 outbreak at a Cayuga County nursing home that started two weeks ago.

The outbreak occurred at The Commons on St. Anthony in Auburn on December 21, according to Loretto official Julie Sheedy. Loretto operates the 300-bed nursing home.

47 employees have been tested positive for the coronavirus. The facility carries out the tests weekly for the employees and daily for the residents.

Since the outbreak began, 21 residents passed away and three remain in the hospital. 11 residents died since Wednesday, Sheedy said.

“Our team is always deeply affected by any loss of life, and our hearts are with the families of these individuals,” Sheedy said.

The total Covid-19 death toll in the county has increased from 13 on Dec. 21 to 44 as of Thursday.
