The incident took place in Potsdam, New York. Potsdam High School sophomore Riley K. Basford started communicating with an unknown person online. The person reportedly demanded thousands of dollars from Basford after his embarrassing photos were obtained by other people also involved in an extortion scheme.
Basford thought he was in relationships with the person he was communicating with. The photos were supposed to be leaked to Basford’s friends, family and on social media. The blackmailers demanded $3,500, the money which the teen didn’t have.
After one of the latest blackmail message that came on noon, the teen committed a suicide.
The teen’s father, Darren Basford, said that the threats were so manipulative that “it feels more like murder than suicide.”
"They continued to bombard him and bombard him, and finally they broke him," the father said. "He thought this was the only way out because he didn't want to be embarrassed."
"I want to get the message out to parents that there is no safe social media," he added. "You need to talk to your kids about all social media, know who they're talking to, and have the kids know who they're talking to."
